Hiking Guide: Forcella del Sassolungo, Italy

Forcella Del Sassolungo Pass and Loop Route

A beautiful summer hiking route that crosses over the Sassolungo pass and circumnavigates the great mesa.

These dramatic peaks in South Tyrol (Süd Tirol) offer a different landscape and challenge than the Swiss Alps, but are just as striking!

The trail starts with a steep ascent to the top of the Forcella pass, where you climb in the shadows of the strange 'coffin' cable cars that ride to the restaurant. After a stop for refreshments, the trail cuts down in a series of steep switchbacks with scree rocks.

Eventually, the trail flattens to run clockwise around the great rock outcrop for several kilometres before you reach the restaurant to fuel up on Apfelstrudel for the last stretch.

Hiking poles are advised.
